Dramaturgy

Who is this for

I work with artists and companies who know what they want to make, but want a second brain in the room while they make it. Having a dramaturg is especially useful when you a approaching a format or a theme that's new to you, or want to use your current project to develop your practice.

What I actually do

I will ask a lot of questions, throw ideas at you, and really listen to everything you have to say, both on stage and off. I will bring a new perspective, and that will help you spot new directions and opportunities. After spending all that time in the world of your project, sometimes an outside eye is needed for the next progression.

I am not here to review your show, to tell you what you're doing right or wrong, or to take away your ownership. You know exactly what you're trying to say, I am here to explore the way you say it.

What I know

I am specifically interested in exploring 'reality' on stage - whether this is through verbatim, immersion, participation, enactment or improvisation. This is the territory I specialise in, but I bring a diverse background that can be applied to any form and genre of work. You have the audience present in the room with you - I ask why that is important to your show.

"Esme proposed questions I'd never considered; transforming my project into a performance"

Tom, Actor

"You brought a warm, open and positive energy to the room which made me feel relaxed and free to explore. You also had specific feedback both on what was working and what to work on which made me feel held and confident in my performance from an outside perspective."

Eve, Actor

What working with me looks like

People usually come to me when they already have something. That something can be an idea, or a fully staged show. Anything that could benefit from a fresh pair of experienced eyes.

I can work with you for a single session, or we can check in weekly from the start of rehearsals until the end of the run. We will define a timeline which suits your needs.

Let me know what stage you're currently at, and I'll begin with asking questions, digging into what you're trying to achieve, what success would look like for you. I'll research into your themes and prepare for what you're finding challenging. Contact me at esme.davis@outlook.com to get started.
